California requires every driver to carry liability insurance, and the rules changed in 2025. This guide covers what the law requires, what else is worth having, and how to stay covered at a price you can manage. For the problems drivers run into most, see common car insurance problems in California.
Understanding California's car insurance requirements
California law requires drivers to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance to drive legally on the state's roads. Since 1 January 2025, the minimum liability coverage in California is:
- $30,000 for injury or death to one person
- $60,000 for injury or death to more than one person
- $15,000 for property damage
These are only the minimums. Many drivers choose higher limits for more financial protection after a serious accident.

Coverage beyond the minimum
Besides liability insurance, California drivers can buy other coverage to protect themselves on the road. Common options include:
- Collision coverage, which helps pay to repair your own vehicle after a collision with another vehicle or object.
- Comprehensive coverage, which covers damage from events such as theft, vandalism or natural disasters.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which protects you if you're hit by a driver who has no insurance, or not enough.
