Questions we get asked
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk in during opening hours.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the vehicle and the transaction, and state fees change. Call (562) 273-3989 or email baruainsurance@gmail.com and we'll tell you the full cost — state fees and anything we charge — before we start.
Can you sort out my insurance at the same time?
Yes — and if you're registering a vehicle you'll need proof of insurance anyway. We can quote it while you're at the counter.
What is a title bond, and when do I need one?
A title bond (also called a surety bond for title) is typically needed when you're trying to register a vehicle in California but don't have a clear title — for example, a lost, missing, or incomplete title. The bond protects the DMV and any future claimants against ownership disputes, standing in for the missing paperwork so the vehicle can be registered.
What do I need to register a vehicle I just bought in California?
Typically the signed title or bill of sale, a smog certification if required for the vehicle, proof of insurance, and a photo ID. Bring whatever paperwork you have and we'll let you know if anything else is needed for your specific situation.
What happens if my vehicle registration has expired?
Driving with expired registration can result in a citation, and penalty fees from the DMV generally increase the longer it stays unregistered. Bring your registration renewal notice or current registration in and we can help you get it renewed.
I lost my vehicle's title. Can you help me get a duplicate?
Yes, we can assist with requesting a duplicate title through the DMV. Bring a photo ID and your vehicle's information, such as the VIN or license plate number, and we'll help you start the process.
How do I transfer a vehicle title to a new owner?
A title transfer generally requires the signed-over title, a bill of sale, and sometimes a smog certification, depending on the vehicle. Bring in whatever documents you have from the sale and we'll help you complete the transfer with the DMV.
Do I need a smog check to register my vehicle?
Most vehicles need a smog certification for registration renewal, though some newer vehicles and certain other categories are exempt. Bring your registration renewal notice and we can tell you whether your specific vehicle needs one.
What is a salvage title, and can you help me register a salvage vehicle?
A salvage title is issued for a vehicle that was declared a total loss by an insurer, often after significant damage, and it requires additional inspection before it can be registered for road use. Bring your vehicle's paperwork and we can walk you through what the DMV requires.
I'm moving to California with a vehicle registered in another state. What do I need to do?
You'll generally need to register your vehicle in California within a set period of becoming a resident, which typically involves a smog certification, a VIN verification, and your out-of-state title. Bring your current out-of-state registration and title and we'll help you figure out exactly what's needed.
Can you help me get replacement license plates if mine are lost, stolen, or damaged?
Yes, we can help you request replacement plates through the DMV. Bring your current registration and a photo ID and we'll help you start the process.
Can I get personalized or specialty license plates through Barua Insurance's DMV services?
Yes, we can help you apply for personalized or specialty plates. Bring your vehicle's registration information and we'll walk you through the application.
Can you help me register a motorcycle?
Yes, we assist with motorcycle registration the same way we do for cars, including title transfers, renewals, and new registrations. Bring your motorcycle's paperwork and a photo ID.
Can you help me register a trailer or RV?
Yes, we can help with registering trailers and RVs, which sometimes have different fee schedules and requirements than a standard passenger vehicle. Bring the vehicle's title or purchase paperwork and we'll help you sort out what's needed.
How do I remove a lien from my vehicle's title once my loan is paid off?
Once your loan is paid off, the lienholder generally releases the lien, and that release needs to be processed with the DMV to clear your title. Bring any lien release paperwork you've received from your lender and we can help you complete the process.
Can you help me add or remove a name from my vehicle's title?
Yes, we can help with adding or removing a registered owner from a vehicle's title, which typically requires the current title and identification for everyone involved. Tell your agent the situation and we'll help you figure out the paperwork needed.
Can you help with a disabled person parking placard application?
Yes, we can help you with the DMV paperwork for a disabled person placard or plates, though a healthcare provider's certification is also required as part of that application. Bring whatever documentation you have and we'll help with the rest.
A family member passed away and I need to transfer their vehicle's title. Can you help?
Yes, we can help with transferring a title after an owner's death, though the exact paperwork needed depends on whether there's a will, a small estate affidavit, or other probate documents involved. Bring whatever documentation you have and we'll walk you through the DMV's requirements.
Can you help register a commercial vehicle with the DMV?
Yes, we assist with commercial vehicle registration, which can involve additional requirements like weight fees or special plates depending on the vehicle's use. Bring your vehicle's information and we'll help sort out what applies.
What is a non-operation (non-op) filing, and when would I need one?
A non-operation filing tells the DMV that a vehicle isn't being driven or parked on public roads, which can help you avoid registration fees while it's off the road. Tell your agent about your vehicle's situation and we can help you file it correctly.
I lost my registration card. Can you help me get a replacement?
Yes, we can help you request a replacement registration card through the DMV. Bring a photo ID and your vehicle's license plate number or VIN.
What is a VIN verification, and when is it required?
A VIN verification confirms that a vehicle's identification number matches its paperwork, and it's commonly required for out-of-state vehicles being registered in California, or for certain title corrections. We can help you understand if your situation needs one.
Are electric or newer low-emission vehicles exempt from smog checks?
Many newer vehicles, including most electric vehicles, qualify for a smog check exemption for a certain number of years from their model year. Bring your registration renewal notice and we can tell you whether your vehicle currently qualifies.
Can you help me get a temporary operating permit for a vehicle I just bought?
Yes, if your vehicle's registration is still being processed, we can help you understand your options for a temporary permit so you can legally drive it in the meantime. Bring your purchase paperwork and we'll check what applies to your situation.
How can I check the status of my vehicle's registration?
You can check your registration status directly with the DMV, or bring your vehicle information to our office and we can help you look into it, especially if you're trying to figure out why a renewal or title transfer is taking longer than expected.
What's the difference between a title-only transaction and a full registration?
A title-only transaction transfers legal ownership of a vehicle without registering it for road use, which is sometimes used for vehicles that won't be driven, like a non-op or a project vehicle. A full registration includes both ownership and the plates and fees needed to legally drive it. Tell your agent what you need and we'll process the right one.
Can I transfer my license plates from one vehicle to another that I own?
In some cases, yes, especially with personalized or specialty plates, though standard plates are often tied to the specific vehicle. Tell your agent about both vehicles and we'll confirm what the DMV allows for your plates.
What do I need to register an off-highway vehicle, like an ATV or dirt bike?
Off-highway vehicles generally need a different registration than street-legal vehicles, often through a separate DMV program. Bring your vehicle's purchase paperwork and we'll help you figure out exactly what applies.
Do I need to bring my vehicle itself to your office for DMV services, or just the paperwork?
For most transactions, like registration renewals or title transfers, you just need to bring the paperwork — the vehicle itself generally isn't required at our office. If a specific situation needs a VIN verification or inspection, we'll let you know what's involved.
