Bundling Car and Home Insurance in California

1 June 2024 · Updated 8 October 2026 · By The Barua Insurance team · CA Lic. #6003484

Bundling means buying your car insurance and your home, condo or renters insurance from the same company. Many carriers reward it with a multi-policy discount, and one company and one renewal are simpler to manage. But a bundle isn't automatically the best deal, so it's worth knowing how it works before you switch.

How bundling saves money

Most carriers that write both auto and property insurance offer a multi-policy discount when you hold both with them. How much, and whether it applies to one policy or both, varies by carrier. Bundling can make other things easier too: one point of contact, renewal dates that line up, and with some carriers a single deductible when one event damages both your car and your home.

When bundling isn't the cheapest option

  • The best auto carrier for you may not be the best home carrier. Two separate policies from two well-chosen carriers can cost less than a bundle from one.
  • California's home insurance market is tight. In recent years some carriers have limited new homeowners policies in parts of the state, especially in wildfire areas, so the carrier with your best auto rate may not be writing home insurance where you live.
  • A difficult driving record changes the math. Carriers that specialize in high-risk drivers don't always write home insurance, and a bundle discount rarely makes up for a much higher auto premium.

Renters can bundle too

You don't need to own a home. At many carriers, renters insurance counts toward a multi-policy discount just as homeowners insurance does. Our guide to renters insurance for California tenants explains what it covers.

How to compare a bundle properly

  1. Get quotes for the bundle and for each policy on its own.
  2. Match the coverage: the same liability limits, deductibles and property limits in every quote.
  3. Compare the total cost for the year, not just the monthly payment.
  4. Check the California details, such as whether the home quote covers what you need. Earthquake coverage is almost always a separate policy.
