SR-22 Insurance in Long Beach, CA: What Drivers Need to Know

If you have been ordered to file an SR-22 in California, you are not alone. Long Beach is one of the busiest driving corridors in the state, with the 405, the 710 and Pacific Coast Highway all converging in the city. Drivers here deal with high traffic volume every day, and a lapse in coverage or a violation can lead to an SR-22 requirement before they know it. This guide explains what the SR-22 is, when Long Beach drivers need one, how long it lasts, and how to get back on the road.

What is an SR-22?

An SR-22 is not an insurance policy. It is a certificate of financial responsibility that your insurance company files with the California DMV on your behalf, using form DL 300. The certificate tells the DMV that you carry at least the state minimum liability coverage: $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident and $15,000 for property damage, the limits that took effect January 1, 2025 under Senate Bill 1107.

You cannot buy an SR-22 by itself. Your insurer adds the filing to your auto policy, then sends the certificate electronically to the DMV. If your policy ever lapses or cancels, the insurer notifies the DMV and your driving privileges can be suspended again.

What triggers an SR-22 requirement in California?

The California DMV requires an SR-22 filing after:

  • A DUI or DWI conviction

  • Reckless driving

  • Three or more traffic violations within a short period

  • Driving without insurance and being involved in an accident

  • Failing to report an accident involving more than $1,000 in damage or any bodily injury

  • License suspension or revocation related to an uninsured vehicle

  • Child support-related license actions

Long Beach drivers who are caught without proof of insurance after an accident on the 710 or at an intersection on Atlantic Avenue face the same SR-22 requirement as anyone convicted of a more serious violation.

How long do you need an SR-22 in Long Beach?

California requires most drivers to maintain continuous SR-22 coverage for three years from the reinstatement date, not from the date of the violation or conviction. The DMV counts from when your driving privileges were restored, so the clock does not start until you have the right coverage in place.

If your coverage lapses at any point during those three years, your insurer must notify the DMV and the period may restart. Severe or repeat DUI offenses can extend the requirement to five years, according to the California SR-22 guidelines published by Insurance Navy.

What is a non-owner SR-22?

If you do not own a car but still need to reinstate your license, a non-owner SR-22 policy may be the right option. It provides liability coverage for you as a driver regardless of which vehicle you borrow or rent. It does not cover a car you own or one you use regularly that belongs to someone in your household.

Non-owner policies are often more affordable than a standard auto policy with an SR-22 add-on, because the insurer is covering a driver who drives less frequently. A licensed agent can tell you whether a non-owner filing fits your situation.

Can I keep my current insurer for an SR-22?

Some carriers decline to file SR-22 certificates or will not renew policies for drivers who need one. If your current insurer cannot help you, a high-risk specialist or an independent agent who works with multiple carriers can often find you coverage. In Long Beach, many drivers with DUIs, reckless driving convictions or multiple violations have been able to find and keep coverage by working with an agent who understands the California non-standard market.

What Long Beach drivers should know about staying compliant

  • Pay on time. A missed payment can cancel your policy, which cancels the SR-22 filing. Set a reminder or enroll in autopay.

  • Do not switch carriers without a plan. If you change insurers, make sure the new policy starts the same day the old one ends so there is no gap.

  • Keep a copy of your certificate. Your agent can give you a copy for your records, though the DMV receives it directly from the insurer.

  • Tell your agent about any changes. Moving to a new address, adding a vehicle or changing drivers on the policy can affect your filing.

SR-22 and ignition interlock devices

California's DUI laws require some drivers convicted of a DUI to install an ignition interlock device (IID) in every vehicle they drive, in addition to maintaining SR-22 coverage. The IID requirement is set by the court and is separate from the SR-22 requirement. Your agent can help you understand both obligations and make sure your policy lists the correct vehicles.
